2nd EditionSteeped in authentic cultural traditions and spiritual beliefs, this rich and wonderful historical novel follows the times and trials of a family band of the Schi’tsu’umsh Indians, now called the Coeur d’Alene Tribe in northern Idaho. Through a boy named Sun Bear and his sister, Rainbow Girl, the band’s oral stories are told as it struggles to hold onto what is precious and sacred about life.
This story made me remember what are the important things that even now in modern times hold us together--family, traditions, sacredness, and, ultimately, love.
--Velma Wallis, author of Reading "Red Thunder" took me back in space and time, to a place and an era when the Tribe was one with the vast, unspoiled area we called home. I recommend this book to all Native Americans as a book that will help them to connect with our past. I recommend it to all non-Indians as a book that will help them to better understand our history, culture, and sacred traditions.
--Ernest Stensgar, former tribal chairman, Coeur d'Alene Tribe
...David Matheson reconstructs the world of an Idaho Native American family in the early 1700s.
